Basketball Group 1
(Beginners, Intermediate Women)

Partner: Special Olympics Nippon Tokyo

In this project, you will help young athletes in elementary school and young women's athletes with intellectual disabilities (not physical) enjoy the game of basketball. You will help them practice basic basketball skills and help them understand the rules of the game. They enjoy getting a lot of encouragement and cheering while they practice.

Time: 12:45 PM to 15:00 PM
Frequency: Several times a month (usually Sundays)

Event Guidelines: Volunteers must be at least 8 years old. All volunteers under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Japanese conversation skills are required. Have experience playing Basketball more than a year. 

Volunteer Voice:  I participated in this project for several months and realized an improvement of the athlete’s level. I love the moment that children shouted ”I was able to do it ”.

 

Basketball Group 2 (Intermediate Men)

Partner: Special Olympics NipponTokyo

   

In this project, you will help young men's athletes with intellectual disabilities (not physical) enjoy the game of basketball and practice intermediate/advanced basketball skills (Varsity, Junior Varsity). 

Time: 14:45 PM to 17:00 PM
Frequency: Several times a month (usually Sundays)

Event Guidelines:Volunteers must be at least 15 years old and must be able to play basketball (Varsity, Junior Varsity). Need to understand basic Japanese. Volunteer must have experience with SONT Basketball (Beginners) project.

Volunteer Voice: I was surprised that the athletes were high level. I was worry that they might be angry if they lost a game, however, they didn't and also I was impressed that they had acquired a sportsmanship already. I want to participate this project again.

Bowling at Tamachi

Partner: Special Olympics Nippon Tokyo

In this project, you will bowl a few games with young adults with intellectual disabilities (not physical). The athletes are part of the Special Olympics Nippon Bowling Team. 

Time: 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM
Frequency: Once a month (usually Sundays)

Event Guidelines:Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Need to understand basic Japanese. Must have experience with the Special Olympics Program and must have bowling experience.

Volunteer Voice: An athlete had over 200 score, but my best score was 71. We were excited when someone got a strike in the game.

Motor Development Program

Partner: Special Olympics Nippon Tokyo

 

In this project, you will help elementary children with intellectual disabilities (not physical) get physical exercise. You will be paired with a special needs child and assist the child to perform the physical activities which are led by Special Olympics coaches.

Time: 9:40 AM to 12:00 PM
Frequency: Several times a month (usually Saturdays)

Volunteer Voice: It was slightly difficult because it was a first time for me to do something with special needs children. I paired with a girl and did exercise, but I was a little nervous because her parents were watching us. However, the girl taught me a lot and she relieved of my strain.  I want to play with her, so I will participate in this project again.

 

Blind Tennis

Partner: Tokyo Miracle Stars

 

In this project, you will help junior & high school students and young athletes with visual impairment who are members of Tokyo Miracle Stars, Blind Tennis Club.
You will also help the students enjoy the game of tennis and learn the skills necessary to play the game.

Time: 9:40 AM to 12:00 PM or 13:00 PM - 16:00 PM
Frequency: Several times a month (usually Saturdays)
Location: The Katsushika Blind School (the gym)  etc

Volunteer Voice:Blind tennis was a new concept for me, but It was a really fun. I enjoyed it more than tennis. Children were so cute and I really want to participate it again.


Escort Children with Special Needs Project
(AIIKU SWIMMING CLUB)

 

Partner: Aiiku Gakuen(Special Needs School)

The children from Aiiku Gakuen swimming club go to a pool in Hamamatsucho. We would like to ask you to help transport the children to swimming venue. 

Time: 11:50 AM to 1:10 PM

Dance Volunteer

Partner: Dance Laboratory

 

In this project, volunteers will practice dancing with children who have special needs, from the Dance Laboratory. You will be supporting them in their efforts to dance and stretch each other and having a fun time. It is okay if you can not dance.

Time: 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM
Frequency: 2 – 3 times a month (usually Saturdays or Sundays)

Blind Jogging 

Partner:Achilles International Japan

     

We will be assisting visually challenged runners and walkers in Yoyogi Park. For a visually challenged individual, it is the most liberating experience to be able to run. This is made possible by the assistance of running guides. In this program, volunteers will be guides for visually challenged runners and walkers. Have a nice Sunday morning with this healthy project.

Time: 8:45 AM to 12:00 PM
Frequency: Once a month (usually 2nd Sundays)
Location: Meeting Point at Harajuku Station Omotesando Gate
